I have come too the realisation that I am old, not in a literal sense, but in a relativistic sense. Given the average age of a proboards users is somewhere between 13 and 16, my stately age makes me a little jaded which is what I attribute to this fairly useless post. I guess I just have an unusual attention span. The problem with this however, is the type of forum I gravitate towards, the sole reason why I am on, or ever was on proboards servers; is dying. The humble design and/or coding forum. I remember a time when it was as ubiquitous as the RP forums we see spammed across the advertisement and GOAYB boards which are in my opinion about as productive as a wet sock.
Personally I mourn the loss, what are your thoughts?

Good post and I know exactly what you mean. Before recently I was almost exclusively on proboards, and sadly only a few design forums on proboards are still left. One of the more active designs boards (N-Designs) even closed it doors the other day. If you even try to look on the GOAYB boards on support you'll find nothing but RP forums like you said. I have nothing against RP boards, as I was a member of a few back int he day and am working on a RP board project right now (which I'm sure will be the most literate RP forum out there, and probably the only one not involving werewolves, vampires, or pokemon), but I think the rise of the supernatural RP forum and the fall of the literate board is concerning. I'm strongly considering making the move to vbulletin, after 7 years on proboards.

It's weird. I don't know if I would necessarily say there's been a fall...because there were so many designers. Like there was a family/community unique to every single board, and all those people had to go somewhere. Where? I'm not exactly sure. But it's not like we all just died.

Unfortunately I caught the dying days of the GOAYB trend. Back when SI was still rockin but not much else. There were a few hopeful comebacks like ThemeSource, but they didnt last long. Proboards seems to be all about the RP forums these days. It's sad, because some of the good ol' design forums had promise. I think moving off Proboards seems to be the only option, unless we can miraculously convince role players that design forums are a better place to be. Even if we could convince the role player designers to spend some time on design/code forums, it would make a difference. There's a lot of them.

It would take one hell of a design forum to convince everyone design forums are cool again.
It would have to be SSD mark II.

just use phpbb if you are going to do anything other than proboards....IMO
But like i told Anthony i believe Proboards caught what happened to my old site is what i call the "social bug" where sites either try to follow into the social trends of facebook, twitter, and kill them selfs by removing the good features for these "social" feeds, OR they don't go into this trend when they should have and potentially opening the gap for newer inventions that do, do this.

If I wanted to use different forum software I'd either use SMF, or just code my own.

SMF is actually pretty good, easy to install and I hear designing for it is nice. It's just a matter of buying hosting + domain, then setting it up.

We'll see what becomes of writhed in the future. For now, I'll deal with proboards until v5 comes out.

From what I hear, V5 is a world easier to customize. Less Java, more CSS apparently. That'd be nice for customization, that's for sure. ;0 writhed.net is only 8.99
